Eight pieces have been released under The e-guitar Sonar Edition, ranging from beginner level to early intermediate. They are all original composition or arrangement of traditional tunes.
Q: Who are you?
A: We are researchers at the
University of Reunion. We work in the field of Knowledge Management and more particularly its transmission. Music in general is the example of knowledge we have chosen to focus on, firstly because we like it (we are guitar fans), then because this is a very popular activity that require both intellectual and 'physical' skills. The best way to learn music for ages is the private lesson with a teacher. Our thesis is to start from there and to reproduce communication scheme used in this process. Thus, we use multimedia and interactivity, to "store" this comprehensive knowledge out of the brain. From our point of view, written music is not enough to learn how to play a musical piece. The process used in e-guitar can be reused for other arts: other instruments of course, dance, sports, painting and even cooking!
Q: Uuh... Reunion Island? Where is it?
A: it is located in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mauritius. Let my friend
Google show you.
Q: What is a virtual DVD?
A: It is a big file to download that represents a DVD Video disc once it is written to a blank media (DVD+/-R-RW). We call it virtual because we do not provide the traditional plastic support. The advantage is that it can be accessed from everywhere is the world, without any shipping.
Q: How can I use a virtual DVD?
A: Everything is explained in a dedicated part of this site. Just access it from the menu above this page. To sum-up, there are two ways of accessing the content:
- you can burn the file to a blank DVDR or DVDRW (prefered) media. The disc can then be used on almost any DVD player or DVD-enabled videogame console. Of course, it can be used on a computer.
- you can use it directly from your hard drive (a bit more complicated on a PC running Windows)
Q: How much does it costs?
A: Nothing. The e-guitar Sonar Edition is free of charge. In return, we would very much appreciate feedback on the system, either by commenting our videos on Youtube for example, or just by writing us a mail.
Q: What is your interest in this operation?
A: In the research we are doing, we need feedback from users to validate or not our hypothesis. Moreover, as it is rather difficult for us to gather funds or resources in general, so we are trying to communicate on our project to attract sponsors. The Sonar Edition has thus two goals:
- sollicitate a worlwide community to find out its opinion toward our system.
- communicate on our work, in the hope to find financial partners that could support our research and maybe launch a product line.
Q: How can I help?
A: There are multiple ways of helping us, according to what you are willing to do:
- First of all, the most useful action is to try the DVD and give us feedback! Refer to the following questions to see how to do that.
- If you are a teacher, you may want to propose new tunes. Maybe, you would record them in the e-guitar way, but to do that, you will have to book a plane for Reunion Island...
- If you have contacts, you can introduce us to world leading businessmen/artists/famous people who could fund the next part of the project. For instance: Steve J., Bill G., Bruce W., Oprah W., Chuck N., Jack B., Mickey M., Wolfgang Amadeus M., etc.
Q: How can I send feedback?
A: There are multiple ways of sending feedback:
-
Fill-in the short questionnaire accessible from here:
access to survey
-
Send us an Email:
-
Leave comments on our
Youtube
or
Dailymotion
videos
- Leave comments on our Blog (soon)
Q: What kind of feedback are you interested in?
A: Everything! Here are topics:
- Who are you? We do not mean your name, but things such as in what part of the world you live, how old are you, what are your hobbies, what kind of music do you listen, what pieces would you like to play, are you a computer geek, do you have a broadband Internet access...
- How did you find our system? Was is easy to use? Did you find bugs? Is the design pleasant? Was the download worth? Was it too long?
- Most important question: did you manage to learn the piece? Was it more efficient than using traditional means (score/tablature, non-interactive video, CDs, ...)?
